Solar powered watches and calculators have been there since years and in our childhood we have seen such calculators by Casio. I still have that calculator and after 15 years it is working perfect. This is the power of solar powered electronics, long life and free source of charging/input. This was a very small example. In my previous article, I have given a few practical applications of renewable energy. In this post I will tell the exact solar powered product with its application that can benefit you in many ways.
I have been searching for such solar powered products once I started travelling and identified the need for light in rural areas and the need to charge smart phone batteries. Then I found a few products in Pakistan and here I am sharing a few with you.
Charge your smart phone during absence of electricity/power or on your night stay trips in remote locations
I like travelling into remote locations and places where there is no light pollution. Sometimes the battery of smart phone is not enough for 48 hours trip due to continuous utilization during day and night. Two years back, I was wondering if there is some device that exist that can charge up battery in absence of electricity. There are options such as the device that you can take with you (forgot the name) and that can charge batteries using USB cable. But that is very expensive and not easily available in Pakistan. Last month, I got to know of an affordable solution.
There is a solar powered light designed by d.light named S-300. It is capable of charging using a Solar panel and provides many hours (16 hours +) of backup on full charge. The light has a USB port where you can insert USB cable (the S-300 comes with cable ports for popular types such as Micro-USB, nokia, samsung) and can charge the phone during day or at night. The light comes with 2 years warranty (replaceable), unbreakable and is weather resistant. The product can last upto more than 5 years. Expensive? No. It cost around PKR 4K. Solar powered solutions requires a good initial investment but this is true for all solar powered solutions. There are small solutions that can be big for people living in rural areas or places where there is no light at all. There are mid range to very expensive systems that are available in the market. At Amazon it is priced at $194.5 as of 9th June 2014. You can convert in PKR. But if you buy in Karachi, it will cost between 12K – 13K. This is by far the most inexpensive home system that I have found so far.
